The guys have it nailed.  A CUMMINS-POWERED STUTZ manufactured by the STUTZ FIRE APPARATUS Co. INC. of Hartford City Indiana.  This company was a descendent of the original STUTZ FIRE ENGINE Co. of Indianapolis.  These were the first Diesel Powered Apparatus manufactured in America.

I thought this fire truck might be a stumper, but many of you recognised it. You guys are pretty smart. Where would the first diesel fire truck in the USA be sold ? Where else but Columbus Indiana, home of the Cummins Engine Company. This New Stutz, of Hartford City, a decendant of the former Stutz Fire Engine Comany, was built in 1937 for a promotional tour across the country. It was first put into service in Columbus in 1939. In researching this truck I have seen it identified in various places as a '37,'38, and '39 model. Now you know why ! Bill White had this 1st. Lots of you sent me info on this truck, so in no particular order, from Jesse Walter:

Old Engine 1 - 1937 Stutz with a Cummins 6-cylinder - 175hp motor/300gal tank
This antique was the first diesel-powered fire apparatus used in the United States.

Old Engine 1 was manufactured in Hartford City, Indiana in 1937 and took a 2-year promotional tour around the country. Columbus placed this engine into service as Engine 1 in 1939. It served the community faithfully until November 1974. Old Engine 1 has been fully restored to like new condition and is still used for parades and ceremonial services.

Bill White:

A new company was formed in 1931 which was no longer under Harry Stutz' control.

New Stutz Fire Engine Co. 1931-1940 - Hartford City, Indiana
1939 they built the first American fire engine to be powered by a diesel engine (Cummins), which was delivered to Columbus, Ind. Despite this pioneering development, New Stutz was too small to compete successfully, and they delivered their last appliance, a triple combination pumper, in 1940.
