I just got back from Massachusetts and I'm exhausted. But it was worth it, it was my best show experience ever.

Some truck cabs ended up on other craft. Like these.

I don't know who made this hovercraft, but I have ridden in a big one . When we lived in the UK, we took the hovercraft over to France. It was large --drove our Land Rover and camping trailer right inside it together with quite a few other vehicles. They fired it up and it raised off the ground and headed for the water. Some 30 (?) miles later we approached the French coastline at speed and I could see the ramp where we were would "land". I kept thinking, Slow Down and I prepared for a "bump" as we "hit" land. NOTHING, We just suddenly were on land and they cut power and we settled down. Ramp opened and we drove out! Cool.

Life  is like a roll of toilet paper the closer  you get to the end, the faster it goes!  Enjoy each day.

Brian Kelly had the cab, and Bill White named the hovercraft. Freightliner supplied several cabs to Bell Aerospace for use on their hovercraft in 1972. Rocky Blakewood, who sent these photos, sent me the following info.

It took a while, but I made contact with a key member from Freightliner of Canada who retired in 1992 after 25 years with the company.

In 1972, Freightliner of Canada supplied 3 four-door 102" cabs to Bell Aerospace to use in the construction of Air Cushion Vehicles, aka Hovercraft.

My source remembers this as being a time that orders were pretty sparse and they wanted to fill gaps in the line. While 3 and 4 door cabs were not common, one was built every couple of years for someone. I would expect these dispensed with the structural tunnel so extra structure would have to have been added in the deck structure. The really interesting point is the cabs are 2" shorter than the 104" cabs used on Freightliner COEs.

Uncommon cab sizes had been done before, Freightliner had built a fleet of 106" cabs for one customer and I have seen pictures of a 100" cab. But it requires unique drawings, bills of materials and fixture adjustments that would be needed. I guess it is all a matter of how hungry you are. But my source said FOC mad no profit off the first three cabs.

Freightliner of Canada supplied a number of additional 102" cabs to Bell Aerospace as they built LACV-30s for the US Navy. Freightliner of Canada also supplied at least one 75" cab which from the pictures I believe was used on the Bell Aerospace Viking.

Here are a few web pages about the Bell Products.

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1946&dat=19791113&id=vmUxAAAAIBAJ&sjid=nqQFAAAAIBAJ&pg=972,595051

The Navy has taken the LACV-30 out of service, most of which were acquired by Alaska Hovercraft.

Seven of the LACV-30 are listed in this report as Freight Ships in Seattle about a third of the way down the attached.

This site lists the owner of LACV-30-25 as Bering Marine Corporation which appears to be part of the Lynden Conglomerate
