F750 to go with diesel or not?

I was told the 3208 was a good little diesel for around town delivery and dump truck work but were a bit stressed out on the highways never liked that they didn't have cylinder liners and couldn't find the service history on the ones I wanted to buy until I found a LN8000(single drive tractor) was a 3208, 5 speed Clarke, 2 speed Eaton rear from new. The second owner swapped over to a 6V53, RT6610, R170 single speed Rockwell. For me a great combination.

Be sure to find out what ratio the rear gears are as most gas trucks were geared 5.57 and lower (higher numerically). A company I drove for in the early 80's had an Isuzu diesel installed in a LN-700 Ford which originally came with a 361 gas V-8. The Isuzu was on the governor at 50 miles per hour with the gas rear gears. The same company bought a LN-7000 Ford new with a 3208 Cat diesel and a 5 speed Clark transmission and 2 speed rear, geared 5.57 to one. The 3208 was on the governor at 62 mph and I had to run it there to stay on schedule. It sucked a valve at 100,000 and blew up with another driver at 200,000 miles. An old Cat mechanic told me if a 3208 cruised around 2000 rpm it would last much longer. It should have been ordered with a 4.10 high range gear. Be sure to do the math before you do the work and be sure that you will be cruising in the sweet spot of whatever diesel you choose.

Realistically you probably should stay in the DD 6V53, DD 4/53, IH DT360, Perkins 354, CAT 3208 or one of the smaller 6's, Cummings BT6 range or similar. A 6v92 is going to really stress a lighter chassis like an F600 chassis. If you are building a toy for fun any of those engines will be fun to drive. I would steer clear of the Class 7/8 level drivetrains for a smaller rig if you are just out having fun with this.

JW-------------Now you're really getting carried away ............and talking like a school kid, maybe not even high school. Your 361 Ford probably produced about300 Lb Ft. torque, and the clutch, transmission, radiator, drive line was engineered for that rating. You may not know the mid range diesels like Dt 466, 3208, 6V53 range from 430 to a little less than 600 lb ft of torque, so thet's stretching the limits of your chassis. If you had any thoughts of a 6V92 with a potential 1000 lb. ft torque...............that's just plain stupidity. If you're gonna haul that much weight, ditch the Ford and buy a real truck !

As far as the weight thing goes, I understand I can't put to big of and engine in, without a lot of modification. On the other hand I was looking online at the Depco site at the weights of the different engines. A 6v92 Detroit weighs 1960 lbs without a turbo and 2005 with. Ford had the Kitty Cat 3208 in those trucks and it weighs 2080 lbs with or without the turbo. So I would think the 6v92 Detroit would be an option? The only thing i'm not sure of is what transmission and rear end Ford used with the 3208 Cat. Also does any one know how good the 3208 with turbo is as to the naturally aspirated ones? I know the 3208s weren't a real popular engine to most folks. Especially the naturally aspirated. Just wondering about the turbo ones.

I've been looking at school buses as an option for the engine and drive train.

DT360 and DT466 are both great International Diesels as well. A 360 should fit pretty easily. The 466 might take a little work. School buses are also great places to find newer drivetrains. A

Thanks for the link. That was one of my fears that I'd run into. The bigger the engine of course the more weight and the front end of that truck not being able to support a bunch of engine weight.

The inline 53 would be the only option for direct bolt up with your transmission and clutch ...............However the 2 piece housing and flywheel are worth a grand, although you might find 'em cheaper with part #s I could give you .
