Does this model have glow plugs, if so, do they immediately go on when you turn the key? And if so, how long do you give it to warm up before you press the starter button. Thanks, Eric. Proud new owner, but clueless

No glow plugs in any heavy duty automotive engine . Turn key to crank .

like Junkmandan said.....

No glow plugs on a Cummins.....if when you crank it its got white smoke then it needs a tune-up on the injectors....if it hunts (revs up & down) its got air in the system (possible fuel pump)

I doubt a shop manual will be of any use to you......

operators manuals are sometimes available on ebay......just keep asking questions if you need specific info.

Old Big Cam 1 400's (which is likely what it has) will not want to start on their own if temps are below 40 deg. Plug in the block heater and it should fire. Avoid ether unless it has a measured shot system. Too easy to do damage with the spray cans.
Pre heating (with a block heater) is the best solution to start any diesel in the cold.
Early Cat 3406A had glow plugs (pre cup engines) but later they went to Direct Injection. They were the only heavy truck engine I know that had glow plugs.

It wouldn't be applicable in this case but there was a single glow pug on early Cummins engines in the 50's -60's that was installed in the intake manifold and worked in conjunction with a fuel primer pump to work akin to an oil furnace that introduced hot air in the intake for easier cold weather starting. They worked quite well but most operators didn't know how to utilize them or they failed due to lack of maintenance. I saw many of them disabled because the odd person would turn on the glow plug then go out and give the air intake a blast of either....I actually saw this happen at Canadian Kenworths factory in Burnaby many years ago and there were two guys involved with the incident which blew the lid off a Farr style air cleaner box and knock the guy with the either can to the ground, all this on a brand new unit.

Yeah, Perkins used the same, as did Landrover. Detroit had a similar system mounted in one of the air box covers, but none of this applies to a late 70's early 80's Cummins/
