When I open some (not all) pages in a thread they open wider than the screen of my computer. I have to pan back and forth left to right and vice-versa to read the message. Has someone figured out how to fix this?

Tim,

This can be caused by the difference in screen resolution between your computer and the resolution of the persons computer who created the wide page. If you have a difficult time with your eyesight and make everything as large as you can, you're much more likely to notice this. If your still young and have good eyesight you'll likely never know the issue exist. There are other reasons that have nothing to do with this, read on....

The wide pages you see have a message that includes a picture or a web link usually an eBay link that is wider than your browser window. It can also be caused by a user that creates their message in another program and cuts and paste it here. Thats what causes them.

Some can be corrected, when they can, we do. In the case of an eBay link we alter the link so they are shorter but still take you to the eBay page.

Photos posted on this site are automatically resized so they don't take up so much real estate. It eliminates this issue.

Photos that are linked from other sites we have no control over, to correct them we usually make a copy and post directly on this site which automatically resizes them to avoid this issue. This is the reason we ask folks to post their photos here rather than linking to photos posted on other sites.

There are a couple of exceptions, when a photo is downsized the quality also goes down, for that reason we make a couple of exceptions.

1. Technical documents - because there's no sense in posting a technical document if you can't read it.

2. What Am I photos - posted by Jeff fall into this category because you need to see the finest of details to figure out what the truck is.

As an alternative we could ban all of these items from being posted, but then we'd miss that content completely.

Hope that helps,

Eddy

The good news is the issue is on our radar screen and our eyes are always open for solutions. Most of it might be as simple as not allowing photos that are linked from other sites.

Its also an issue for other reasons. If the site the picture is hosted on moves the photo or deletes it, we now have missing photos that are nothing more than little red X's. The last time I went thru and cleaned those up it took about 12 hours to do.

In my New Member With New Truck thread, page 2 is the right width for my screen, but page 1 is too wide.  There's no links or pics in there.  Do you know why this happened?

Thanks.
